April 1 - 2 - Rolling Hills and Bakersfield

Yesterday we were at Rolling Hills Casino In Corning, CA.  We travelled from Eugene through the Siskiyou Pass.  We were lucky as there was a winter storm warning.  There was heavy rain at times, but NO SNOW.  On a funny note, it snowed at home this morning,  enough to stick to the ground.

Rolling Hills has a nice RV park for a reasonable rate.  With Good Sam discount $50.00, without it’s still cheap.. $57?  $60?

Full hook ups.  But no wifi.  We decided to treat ourselves to dinner at the casino.  Well not much of a treat.  They have changed the restaurants since we were there last time.  The new restaurants decor, leaves a bit to be desired.  It’s a “rock” theme.  With pictures all over the walls… giant album covers on the ceiling, multiple TVs, blaring music, GREEN chairs and all the tables, if they were pushed together, would be a beer hall theme.  Which of course the theme is rock and brew!   As they have a brewery beside it.  It was way too much stimulation. And jammed together.  Not really pleasant, and not really attractive.

The food is not cheap.  Gone are the days of reasonable food at most casinos.  (Washington state still has a few, really good food deals at their casinos.)

I had fish tacos.  Two which were fairly generous.  Overstuffed, with a lot of slaw.  A side of baked beans, that tasted more towards Chili.  And a few taco chips and salsa.  $16.95.  They were good but had to nice and fork the 2nd one, as it was too hard to eat.  Too messy.  Too much slaw.

Wilbur had a combo.  Ribs, chicken and pulled pork.  A tiny side of coleslaw, and big slice of cornbread.  The TWO ribs were tender and flavourful.  The boneless chicken BREAST, was small and a touch dry.  And HUGE mound of pulled pork.  Which had good flavour, but it was weird to just have this huge mound of pulled pork.  And if it’s a bbq combo, the chicken should have been a bone in breast or leg.  And TWO ribs, maybe should have been four, and less pulled pork.

$27.95!!!!!

So not cheap and not great.  Not horrible.  But really not a bbq combo.  Oh, and the weird whiteish stuff in the one container was butter…frozen…so hard to butter corn and cornbread.

Overall not a great experience and wouldn’t want to go again.

I did gamble $50. bucks and walked away with $55 after playing for about 45 mins… so up five whole dollars, which isn’t bad.

Today we drove to Bakersfield.  After Lodi, CA, we left the I5 and went down the 99.  What a rough road in spots and construction areas   Narrow lanes.  Lanes pushed onto the side shoulder etc.  they weren’t doing anything, as it was Sunday, thank goodness.

We are now at Rivers Run RV park.  It is really nice.

I almost stepped on the teeniest, tiniest, garter snake.  Sunning himself on the path, beside the rv park.

Tomorrow a short drive to Palm Springs.
